UDOT’s Traffic & Safety Division manages an HSIP program that began with just a few million dollars and has grown to around $24 million. During this evolution, the approach has evolved multiple times; with new recommendations issued as safety research changes. Workflow Manager has served as a highly adaptable and powerful management platform for tracking program performance.
Project requests are submitted by staff engineers in region offices. Those requests are then evaluated and ranked based on their ability to improve highway safety. The highest ranking projects are add to the annual program and forwarded to the STIP preparation group for the annual STIP process. During design and construction, Workflow Manager syncs data with UDOT’s project management and financial systems. This provides an up to the minute view of federal obligations and project status. Streamlined data management has greatly simplified UDOT’s annual reporting processes and enabled them to create a high-performing program year after year.
